INTENSIVE COURSES SUMMER 1999

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Training Services of the European Institutions are jointly organising intensive summer courses (4 to 6 hours a day). This will enable participants to complete a level in either two or three weeks depending on the frequency of the course.
- Courses will be organised only in Community languages
- One course per participant.
- Two sessions will be organised :
- 1st session : Dates : from 26 July to 13 August (3 weeks)
Frequency : 4 hours per day
Levels : all level 1 and 2 classes
- 2nd session : Dates : from 16 August to 27 August (2 weeks)
Frequency : 6 hours per day
Levels : all level 5 and 6 classes
- or lFevels 3 and 4, the majority of courses will be organised during the first session.
- Timetable for courses :
- Frequency - 4 hours per day : a half-day (morning or afternoon)
- Frequency - 6 hours per day : 4 h in the morning + lunch + 2 h in the afternoon
- Courses will be organised for each period and level only on condition that there are sufficient participants. Requests will be accepted within the limits of the number of places available.
- Requests made by a directorate general or a service will take priority over requests from individuals.
- Priority will be given to applicants who have not yet had the opportunity to participate in the twice-weekly standard courses or the semi-intensive or intensive courses organised during the current academic year, unless they can justify an urgent need for the language in their work.
PLACEMENT TESTSFor people whose level in the language requested is not known, placement tests will be organised at the end of April and the beginning of May. An invitation will be sent in due course.
ADMISSION CRITERIA
Applicants must :
- Be either an official, a temporary, auxiliary or local agent at the closing date for applications. Seconded national experts (END) will be admitted if space is available.
- Never have participated in a specialised or specific course in the language requested (or not have been assessed as being of a higher level than level 6 in the placement test).
For those who are currently attending a standard course at level 6, only those students who have not successfully completed the session will be considered.
PROCEDURE FOR ENROLMENT
All applications for an intensive course must be on the basis of a new request even if the applicant is already attending a standard twice-weekly course.
If the participant passes the examination at the end of the intensive course :
- Those who are not enrolled in a standard twice-weekly course and wish to continue classes in that language must submit a new application for the next session of standard courses.
- Those who are already attending a standard twice-weekly course will be automatically enrolled at the next level when the courses restart.
The completed application form should be sent through the appropriate hierarchical channels and submitted via the Training Coordinator of each DG/service to the Training Unit IX.A.3 - LANGUAGE TRAINING SECTOR (office GUIM 1/60), by mail only (and not by fax).
APPLICATIONS RECEIVED AFTER THE CLOSING DATE (16 APRIL) CANNOT BE CONSIDERED.
You will be informed of the outcome of your application from 1 June 1999. Please refrain from calling or visiting us before this date, so that we can give our full attention to setting up the session for the benefit of all our participants.
