Survival level (SL) in ENGLISH and FRENCH

  1. OBJECTIVE

    To acquire (over a period of about 6 months) language skills which will enable the participants to « survive » in the work environment and to:
    - understand and communicate orally without major difficulties
    - understand the basic meaning of a text
    - draft simple texts (e-mails, simple memos and notes, etc.)


  2. ELIGIBLE STAFF

    This training which requires a service request is intended only to statutory staff and SNEs (Seconded national experts) who :
    - have recently been recruited (within the previous 3 months) (priority will be given to this group)
    - have to learn English or French urgently for professional reasons, particularly in the context of job mobility
    and who have no previous knowledge or only a limited knowledge of the language requested.
    Enrolment is limited to a single language for each complete cycle of 3 modules.


  3. CALENDAR

    The courses will begin on Monday 25th September 2000. Several sessions of these courses will be organised during the academic year. The dates will be announced on the Language Training site as and when the courses are organised (see EuropaPlus: TRAINING (directly accessible from the home page of EuropaPlus) = LANGUAGE TRAINING - BRUSSELS)


  4. LANGUAGES OFFERED

    Only EN (English) and FR (French).


  5. SUGGESTED TIMETABLE

    On the basis of the requests and of organisational constraints the following time slots will be proposed:
    08 h 00 - 09 h 30
    13 h 30 - 15 h 00
    17 h 30 - 19 h 00
    However, the courses for real beginners will be organised only from 08 h 00 to 10 h 00.


  6. NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS

    Maximum 15 per class.


  7. NUMBER OF MODULES AVAILABLE

    There are three modules (A, B, C) available corresponding to the candidates' level of knowledge which will be determined by a placement test. Module A is intended for people who have no knowledge at all of the language requested (real beginners).
    The pedagogical aim (survival level) will be achieved by the end of module C.


  8. LENGTH AND FREQUENCY

    Each module will last about 50 hours. The courses will in principle take place from Monday to Thursday for 1 h 30 a day.
    On the other hand, the course for real beginners will be for 2 hours a day.


  9. PLACEMENT TEST

    All the applicants including real beginners will be asked to attend a placement test.
