N° 14-2004 / 01.03.2004

International number plates

Following the enactment of the Belgian Royal Decree on vehicle registration of 20 July 2001, employees and other regular staff of international organisations (including the European Union institutions in Belgium) can now apply for a new international number plate.
If you are eligible for such plates, you may apply for them while waiting to be entered in the Belgian National Register or instead of the EUR or Belgian number plate.
To do so, you must use the standard vehicle registration form (demande d’immatriculation) that is also used to order EUR or Belgian number plates – this must be filled in and signed and bear both your insurance company’s stamp and a fiscal stamp (€31, available from post offices).
You must then take it in person to the DIV (Vehicle Registration Directorate - rue de la Loi 155, window No 1), together with a certificate of employment issued by the Privileges and Immunities Department of your institution and your national passport or Belgian or special identity card.
If you are a member of the auxiliary or temporary staff on a fixed-term contract, you will be issued a temporary international number plate valid for the duration of your contract.

IMPORTANT:

You must also pay both the initial road tax (taxe de première mise en circulation) and annual road tax.
Note in this connection that from 1 January 2004 you will be sent, along with your international number plates, a form which you must fill in, sign and sent to:

Service Public Fédéral Finances (SPFF)
Recouvrements
Bd. du Jardin Botanique 50, Bte 59
1010 Brussels

(or simply return it to the Privileges and Immunities Department of your institution which will forward it on your behalf).

If you have an international number plate issued prior to that date, you are strongly advised to declare your use of your vehicle to the authorities; non-compliance is punishable with a fine. The relevant declaration form is attached – please read the instructions carefully.

From 2005 the administration of international number plates will be computerised by the SPFF and payment requests will be sent out automatically to all those concerned at their home address.

Please note you must return these plates to the Privileges and Immunities Department if/when you cease employment with the institutions, are transferred or go on special leave (CCP).
