BUREAU CENTRAL ![]() During the years 1990-1992, in the framework of slimming programmes, a Brussels medical surgery (in Uccle), issued prescriptions for capsules made up from Chinese plants. It turned out that, instead of containing Stephania Tetrandra, they actually contained Aristolochia extract, a toxic plant. This treatment resulted in several patients suffering from irreversible kidney failure requiring dialysis, and in certain cases requiring kidney transplants, as well as others contracting certain types of cancer. An Administrative Notice was already issued in 1992 implicating these Chinese plants. A list has been drawn up of a certain number of patients who received this treatment. In Belgium 110 cases have already been registered (10 of whom are members of the JSIS), but according to some estimates, around 10,000 people could be concerned. The same problem also exists in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and in the Netherlands. Given the importance of early detection, we strongly advise anyone who followed a slimming treatment based on Chinese plants between 1990 and 1992 to check with their doctor to see if they are possibly concerned. Doctors in Belgium have all received specific instructions on this subject. If laboratory tests indicate that a specific medical follow-up is necessary, we would please ask you to contact Mrs Dory in ADMIN.B.5. Tel: 32.2.296.09.92.
