RÉGIME COMMUN D'ASSURANCE MALADIE

Application of new equality coefficients
from 1 January 2003

Equality coefficients apply to the reimbursement ceilings for treatment paid for in countries other than Belgium and Luxembourg. These coefficients were introduced to take into account differences in the cost of medical care in the Member States.

In accordance with Article 8 of the Sickness Insurance Rules the equality coefficients have been reviewed to ensure, as far as possible, equal treatment for all members, regardless of the Member State in which their medical expenses are incurred.

The new equality coefficients apply to treatment carried out after 1 January 2003. Please note that some coefficients have been reduced and others increased. These changes may affect the reimbursable amounts indicated in estimates or prior authorizations granted by claims offices before 1 January 2003.

The attached table does not include equality coefficients for some types of treatment in certain countries (e.g. category D surgical operations in Austria), as there have been too few cases to establish a reliable statistical basis. Where there is no equality coefficient, the reimbursement ceilings set out in the Rules will apply. However, if the rate of reimbursement for treatment received is below 40%, special reimbursement may be granted, where appropriate, under Article 8 of the Rules. If such a situation arises, please contact your claims office immediately.
