Municipal elections in Belgium on 8 October 2006

The Belgian municipal elections will take place on 8 October 2006.

Every citizen of the Union within the meaning of Article 8 of the EC Treaty - i.e. a national of a Member State –has the right to vote in the forthcoming municipal elections, and also to stand as municipal council candidates.

You must declare your intention to vote by applying to be entered on the electoral roll, kept by the municipal authority of your main residence, by means of an application form.

This duly completed application form should be submitted - together with a photocopy of your identity card - to the municipal authority in question by fax, post or in person before the 31 July 2006 entry deadline. You will be handed or sent an acknowledgement confirming receipt of your application.

Hence, there is a certain urgency to enter on the electoral roll for those willing to exercise the right to vote.

In order to provide more information on these elections, a lunch-time conference on the subject will be organised on Wednesday 21 June (GUIM).

Practical information, as well as the application form and the links to the different regions, can be consulted via the Pers Admin website : http://www.cc.cec/pers_admin/privileges_bxl/elections06_en.html
