Registration in Belgium of imported vehicles or vehicles already registered in another Member State

I. The rules

Chapter I, Section 2, Article 3 §1 of the “Arrêté Royal” of 20 July 2001 relating to the registration of vehicles provides that persons resident in Belgium shall register vehicles which they wish to use in Belgium in the vehicle register referred to in Article 6 thereof, even if such vehicles are already registered in another country (http://verkeerweb.be/npl/nplFr/nplFr2_5.html):

Persons are resident in Belgium if they meet one of the lowing conditions:

a) they appear on the population register of a Belgian municipality;

This means that officials and other staff must register their vehicles in Belgium as soon as they have a special identity card (SIC) or a municipal identity card, because they then appear on the population register.

Foreign vehicles must be registered in Belgium at the latest within a period of 6 months.

If a police check finds that the person concerned appears on the national register and is driving a vehicle with a foreign number plate, the vehicle may be confiscated and the person concerned will have to pay a fine and begin customs clearance procedures.

II. Regularisation procedure

To initiate this procedure, you must hold a Belgian identity document (such as the SIC).
You will have to present your vehicle and documents from the country in which it was previously registered (registration papers, invoice, proof that the vehicle was insured for six months prior to your taking up your duties in Belgium) to :

Brussels Regional Customs Office (Tour et Taxis)
Rue de l’Entrepôt 11 (ground floor) – Office 2 – 1020 Brussels
Mr. Van Gerwen (tel. 421.38.29 or 32)
Open from 08.00 – 11:30 hours and from 13:00 – 15:30 hours
(no appointment necessary)

This office will give you a document “demande d’immatriculation” with a “label 705” and will put its seal in box “W” of the document.

You will then have go to the Privileges Office: SC 11 3/24 (between 9H and 12H) to lodge a request for a Belgian number plate.
