Application of new equality coefficients

Since 1 January 1991 equality coefficients have been applied to the reimbursement ceilings for treatment paid for in Community currencies other than Belgian and Luxembourg francs. These coefficients were introduced to take into account differences in the cost of medical care in the Member States.
In accordance with Article 8 of the Sickness Insurance Rules the equality coefficients have been reviewed to ensure, as far as possible, equal treatment for all members, regardless of the Member State ( this also includes Switzerland ) in which their medical expenses are incurred.

The new equality coefficients apply to treatment carried out after 1 September 1998. Please note that some coefficients have been reduced and others increased. These changes may affect the reimbursable amounts indicated in estimates or prior authorizations granted by claims offices before 1 September 1998.

The attached table does not include equality coefficients for some types of treatment paid for in certain currencies (e.g. surgical operations in Austria), as there have been too few cases to establish a reliable statistical basis. Where there is no equality coefficient, the reimbursement ceilings set out in the Rules will apply. However, if the rate of reimbursement for treatment received is below 40%, special reimbursement may be granted, where appropriate, under Article 8 of the Rules. If such a situation arises, please contact your claims office immediately.
